Looking to add soft elegance to your windows? Relaxed roman shades are the perfect blend of form and function, and the best part—they’re totally DIY-friendly. Whether you’re customizing for a bedroom, living room, or kitchen, this guide walks you through exactly how to make your own relaxed roman shades from scratch.

What Are Relaxed Roman Shades?

Unlike flat or hobbled roman blinds, relaxed Roman shades have a dip in the center, creating a more laid-back, gentle look. They are not supported by battens or stiffeners and so naturally drape and hang in soft folds. They’re especially popular for:

  • Bedroom window treatments

  • Feminine or coastal interiors

  • French country or casual modern feel

Tools & Materials You’ll Need

To get started, you’ll need:

Materials:

  • I used medium weight Home décor fabric, (cotton, linen or linen blends are also perfect)

  • Fabric for lining (optional: blackout or light-filtering)

  • Nylon lift cord or roman shade tape.

  • Wooden header board

  • Cord lock or pulley system

  • Thread / sewing machine

  • Staple gun

  • Screwdriver, drill, mounting hardware

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Measure Your Window

Inside mount: Measure the width and height of your window recess.

Outside mount: Add 1.5–2 in. on each side for optimal coverage.

Step 2: Cut the Fabric

Cut out main and lining fabric to measure the size of your window plus seam allowance (usually one inch at each side, two inches at the bottom).

Step 3: Sew the Panels Place the lines right sides together

Lay fabric and lining right sides facing. Stitch up the side, with the top open. Turn right-side out and press.

Step 4: Add Rings and Cording

Add rings in vertical lines along the back of the shade (usually spaced, either two or three rows).

Pull lift cords around each ring and up through a cord lock located in the headrail.

Step 5: Attach the Header Board

Staple the top of the shade to the back of the wood header.

Screw and bracket the board to the window frame.

Step 6: Adjust and Finish

Gently tug the cords evenly through to make the unique “relaxed” dip in the middle.

Knot the cords and pull until hanging lightly and evenly.

Tips for Best Results

  • To prevent the window from sagging between these attachements, simply insert a strip of fabric, between two of the layers, or reinforce them with an extra layer of interfacing for wide windows.

  • Selecting fabric: Always select a high-quality fabric that drapes well.

  • Think about motorization of your shade for ease and cleanliness
